Well, it seems like what I suspected was what happened. Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose and drug interaction. When I first heard about his death I just thought it was irresponsibile of him to be on drugs. After all, we are inundated with the Lindsay Lohan’s and Britney Spears who are going in and out of rehab like it’s a revolving door. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it was out of character to for him to have died from an intentional overdose, especially since he is a father of a two year old. I was guilty of stereotyping Heath Ledger as another one of these celebrities who live a life of excess.

Turns out that the poor bastard wanted to get some sleep. He was taking a bunch of anti-anxiety meds which were prescribed presumably by a psychiatrist. I think it’s that mentality that someone else can give you drugs to help you deal with a problem. The fact of the matter is, HIS PROBLEMS WERE REAL. He’d broken up with the mother of his child. He wouldn’t get to see his kid as often as he would have liked. That is reality. What kind of drug fixes a relationship? I think in this society we’re too fast to prescribe drugs to solve problems.

I remember when I was a kid in elementary school. The kid with the worst medical problem was epileptic. Now we have all these labels for kids, ADD, ADHD, Autism, etc. etc. And we also have drugs for these kids such as Ritalin. WTF? I can’t think of any kid that I went to school with that needed drugs. What drug do you prescribe for a kid with an acute case of shyness? These things are NORMAL.

My wife has a co-worker whose son was diagnosed by teachers(read not medical professionals) as having “Social Autism.” I have never heard of that. That pissed him off, but another co- worker said to go with it because the state was going to pay for it for free. So he did. Guess what they found out? They found out that there was nothing wrong with his son but the kid NEEDED GLASSES. What kind of schools do we have now that teachers quickly assume the role of medical provider and bust out the latest ‘diagnosis de jour’ on your kid so that the teacher can feel more that what they are? What kind of drugs do you think a psychiatrist should have given to a boy with bad eyesight?

Kids are kids. Beyond that, they don’t need scientifically ordained labels. They have been raised in good health before Sigmund Freud. In this sense, I agree with Tom Cruise. I do feel that in many ways, psychiatry is pseudo science. If you have a kid who you feel is hyper, let him play out side and use up that energy. A good parent can have more control over a kid than a bad parent with pharmaceuticals.

We raise our kids in this MTV quick cut, short attention span world where everything must be summed up in a sound byte then complain that our kids have no attention span. Seemingly, the only kids who have the ability to concentrate are the ones that are autistic, but not all autistic kids are high functioning.

I think that people need to question the wisdom of teachers and doctors. These people are human and susceptible to fallibility like anyone else. Having a degree does not make you God.
