I saw a Gizmodo interview with Bill Gates, the one where he basically says that Vista sucks. That really impressed me. It takes a lot of guts to admit a mistake. This is actually a good thing. When you look at the big picture, I suspect that Vista release fiasco has driven more people to Linux and Macs than any other event. Before the fanboys get on me, let me say that I can consistently bluescreen my HP laptop with the remote that came with it. I'm convinced that Vista was designed for dumber people. While it may work for them with UAC and confirming everything, it was a big pain in the ass to go figure out how to turn this off. It's like having a chip in your car that makes you drive under 55. No one would tolerate this and that is one of the many things to hate about Vista. I also hate not having access to the Documents and Settings. Is this something that noobs screw up so often that the manufacturer must take control of it out of their hands? What if you know what you're doing? What if you are denied access to data or settings that you know how to manipulate? I'm actually quite drawn to the idea of getting an Asus Eee. I have an ipod Touch, but it crashes from time to time, depending on the website and it's slow. That too also needs to be hacked in order to improve the funcionality of the thing. What is up with taking control away from the users? I'm going to set my laptop to dualboot into Ubuntu. I want to see if it actually performs better. I'm going to delete the partition that has the OS backup and put it there. I'm also going to downgrade it to XP so I can get some better performance out of it. Since everything but Photoshop is available to me on Linux, I see no reason to not try it. Once XP is up and running on the laptop, I can delete the backup partition and resize it to install Ubuntu. I've run it on some of my older machines and I must say that it seems to work painlessly. I'm looking forward to doing this. Every year I reinstall Windows, to clean out all the crap. This should be no different.
